How To: Start A Travel Blog

Starting a Travel Blog

     So you want to start a travel blog or even any other type of blog? There are many things that you should ask yourself and all of them will help you find what sets you apart from everyone else. There are hundreds, if not thousands of travel bloggers out there, and while some of them are earning a lot of money, a lot of them might only be doing it for fun. Travel blogging is hard and so is everything that comes with it. Here are some questions to ask yourself;

1. Why do I want to start my blog?
2. How can I set myself apart?
3. Is there a niche that I fit into?
4. What do I want to name my blog?
5. How much time can I dedicate to blogging?

Why do you want to start a blog?

     For a lot of people, they begin blogging because they want to be able to share their experiences with others, and some people begin because they think they can make a ton of money doing it. Starting a travel blog, or any blog, has become easier over the years, as the internet makes it easier and easier for people to publish their own content. If you're looking to start a money making blog, there are a lot of courses out there to help you find your full potential, but for most people looking to just share their experiences, all you really need is the drive to continue to create content, and the know how to do it.

Are you a thrill seeker? Traveling on a budget only?

     These are both different niches that your blog could fall into, and there are hundreds more out there. From traveling with family (check out Wanderlust Storytellers)  to budget travel (check out Nomadic Matt), and everything that you can possibly think of in between. These different niches can set you apart, and help you appeal to an audience, meaning they are more likely to come back since the content will appeal to them. One of my personal favorites is Expert Vagabond, I am a big fan of the adventure blogs he writes, but his photos always bring me back. All of the websites mentioned have some great blogging tips for beginning your adventure as a travel blogger on them also.

Its all in a name...

     Naming your blog is going to be one of the most important things you do. Especially if you plan on doing it for more than just fun. You don't want the blog name to be too long, contain too many different symbols or numbers, and you want it to be something easily memorable. That is how we went from "The Wanderluster's Journal" to "Wanderluster's Journal". Pretty easy to notice how one is even just a little easier to remember. Find something that sets you apart, but is memorable and that will be easily associated with your blog.

It all takes time.

     Our biggest downfall here at Wanderluster's Journal was time. We never put in the time, and we never had the time when this all began. We never had the time it took to fully make sure that everything was as it should be, and to continue to produce the content that was needed to keep people engaged. Now I try to keep a schedule of blogs almost 2 months in advance that can be published at anytime if they are needed, and there are usually some in the drafts ready to go on the blog. This helps us personally, because we may not always have the time, so when we do, we make sure that the time is used practically enough that we can be covered when we may not have the time.

These are just some simple questions and reasonings on different things to ask yourself when you want to start your travel blog. We have found it to be an awesome endeavor and a great way to share our stories. Feel free to contact us in the comments or on our contact us page if you have any questions or comments.
